Supported living services come in all shapes and sizes and The Quays is a large, stylish Victorian property providing a spacious home for four adults with learning disabilities and complex needs. There is a big, enclosed garden to the rear with easy access and the very large bedrooms are all en suite.
The Quays is situated on a quiet, tree-lined avenue on the outskirts of Doncaster but within ten minutes’ walk of the town centre and the Frenchgate Centre, which has shops, food outlets and other attractions. Also within walking distance or a short bus ride are Doncaster Racecourse, the Lakeside shopping complex and the Dome Leisure Complex, which has a ten-pin bowling alley, multiplex cinema, ice rink and swimming pools.
Supported living offers you more choice; choice about where to live, who to live with and who you want to provide your support. It’s also about taking responsibility for making the right choices, for looking after the people around you and looking after yourself.
Adults with specialist care and support needs have traditionally lived with their families, in hospital or within a residential care home but most people want to be as independent as possible and supported living is designed to help you be just that. For people who need regular substantial support but want to do as much as possible for themselves, supported living offers the opportunity to take greater control of their lives life whilst not being left without guidance and assistance when required.
Within The Quays each person receives ‘support’, not just ‘care’ and how much and what kind of support is agreed before they move in. Each individual is encouraged and empowered to make decisions about their own lives, from small issues such as daily activities, what to eat and how their room is decorated to bigger issues, such as where to live or whether to work. Just like people in the wider world, each person living at The Quays rents their accommodation and has their own tenancy agreement, the only difference is that support – the right kind of support – is there when needed.
